How Drain Problems Can Spread Through Connected Lines
Residential and commercial plumbing systems link individual fixtures through progressively larger pipes:
- Fixture Drain: The short individual pipe connecting a sink, shower, or tub directly to the wall or floor.
- P-Trap: The curved pipe section beneath a fixture that holds a water seal to help prevent sewer gases from entering the building. Hair, grease or debris may also collect inside the bend.
- Branch Line: A horizontal pipe gathering wastewater from several room fixtures and directing it to an internal stack.
- Shared Drain Stack: A primary vertical or horizontal line connecting branch pipes across multiple rooms or floors.
- Property’s Main Sewer Lateral: The underground pipe carrying all building wastewater out to the municipal sewer line.
- Exterior Cleanout Access: Ground-level pipe access points outside the building providing entry into the main sewer lateral.
When an obstruction forms deeper inside a shared stack or main sewer lateral, wastewater backup symptoms can spread across multiple connected room drains.
